"We invite you to commune with us, and to think about our bodies and our spiritual states in these strange times."
Choy Ka Fai’s multidisciplinary art practice situates itself at the intersection of dance, media art, and performance. For the last decade, Choy has been researching the dimensions of bodily experience, expression, and perception. His work poses questions about the body as a medium and as an archive of remembrance in the midst of digital streams as they dissolve classical conceptions of physical corporeality. He appropriates technologies and narratives to imagine new futures of the human body and to speculate on realms of reality other than our own.
CosmicWander is an ongoing project by Choy that explores shamanic and folk dance cultures in Asia and which traverses the process of worlding across different communities. Having ventured into the region in search of trance experiences, the artist has met over 50 shamans and documented dance rituals ranging from collective trance in Siberia to mythological practices in Java. CosmicWander: Expedition presents Choy’s research to-date, through a major solo exhibition that presents varied perspectives on humanity’s attempt to connect, to question, and to perceive and interact with different states of realities through ritualistic practices. Stories and images composed from his encounters with altered states are interwoven with the artist’s own speculations, to offer a choreographic sequence of material inspired by practices observed in Singapore, Indonesia, Siberia, Taiwan, Vietnam and Bhutan.
Choy Ka Fai is a Berlin-based Singaporean artist whose visionary practice reimagines the limits of the human body at the intersection of dance, media art, and performance. His multidisciplinary work transcends traditional realms to question realities beyond our own. His acclaimed CosmicWander series (2019–present) investigates Asian shamanic dance cultures through performance and exhibition, premiering at the Singapore Art Museum and tanzhaus nrw, Düsseldorf. His performance works have been presented by Sadler's Wells (London), ImPulsTanz (Vienna), and Kyoto Experiment (Japan). Recent exhibitions have been featured at the Biennale of Sydney, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), and Bundeskunsthalle (Bonn). Ka Fai holds an M.A. in Design Interaction from the Royal College of Art, London.
